India, Oct. 1 -- Indian markets remain closed today for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Benchmark indexes Sensex and Nifty fell 0.8 percent and 0.9 percent respectively on Thursday to extend losses for a fourth straight session due to continued selling by foreign investors amid elevated oil prices and global bond yields.

As global risks mount, the rupee fell by 37 paise to close at 96.31 against the dollar, reaching its lowest level in more than two months.
