India, Aug. 28 -- Gold held steady on Friday but was on course for its strongest monthly advance since 1999 in the wake of the Treasury's plan to keep bond yields down.

Spot gold was little changed at $4,602.34 an ounce but was up nearly 14 percent so far in August following efforts by the U.S. Treasury Department to cap rising long-term borrowing costs through aggressive bond buybacks. U.S. gold futures were down 0.1 percent at $4,658.46.
