France, July 25 -- President Donald Trump's government determined last year that Haiti no longer met the necessary conditions for the special protection, which temporarily grants the right to live and work in the US for people who come from countries where conflict, disaster or other conditions make it unsafe to return.

After a series of legal challenges that ended in the Supreme Court, that decision will become effective next week.

For the estimated 348,000 Haitians with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), its termination will mean losing both their protection from deportation and their authorisation to work.
