France, Sept. 19 -- The United States, Denmark and Greenland said late on Friday they had entered into an agreement for the US to ‌develop a significant military presence on Greenland, while prohibiting US adversaries from building their own bases on the island.

Trump said the agreement would grant the US "permanent control over security, and all other needs" in the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland welcomed the deal to "strengthen security" in the region and said it would not compromise Greenland's sovereignty.

They said the deal was expected to be signed next week at the UN General Assembly.
