Nigeria, Aug. 12 -- Governments around the world are increasingly debating how far they should go in restricting children's access to social media amid concerns about online safety and young people's digital wellbeing.

Australia became the first country to implement a nationwide minimum age of 16 for accounts on certain social media platforms.

The restrictions took effect on 10 December 2025 and require age-restricted platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent under-16s from holding accounts.

One social media platform that appears to attract many young people is TikTok.
