Nigeria, Sept. 4 -- The presidency says the ongoing US court case involving President Bola Tinubu is a civil matter and not a criminal matter.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on Thursday, said "the matter is a civil records-disclosure dispute under the United States Freedom of Information Act. It is not a criminal case against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, nor has the court found him guilty of any criminal wrongdoing."

Mr Onanuga accused the opposition of mischaracterising the matter that involves the civil forfeiture of funds by Mr Tinubu to the US government while he was being investigated for drug-related offences in 1993, six years before Mr Tinubu was elected the governor of Lagos State.
