Nigeria, Sept. 12 -- There is an intriguing idea at the centre of Ordinary People, the Nollywood action-thriller series directed by Moses Inwang: what if the seemingly ordinary people living behind the gates of an affluent Lagos estate were anything but ordinary?

The eight-episode Netflix series builds its world around Mirage Estate. In this upscale community, polished houses, quiet streets and seemingly respectable neighbours conceal a catalogue of crimes, betrayals and dangerous secrets.

It is a promising premise. Unfortunately, Ordinary People repeatedly demonstrates that having too many secrets is not the same as knowing how to tell a compelling story.
