Nigeria, Sept. 30 -- The discussion about mass weddings must also distinguish carefully between the beneficiaries and the wider problem of child marriage.

Child marriage remains an important part of the wider context in which publicly supported marriages in northern Nigeria should be considered, but it should not be conflated with mass weddings themselves. UNICEF reported in December 2025 that 33.4 per cent of Nigerian women aged 20-24 had married before age 18, with prevalence close to 50 per cent in the North-East and North-West, while the median age at first marriage rose from 16.6 years among women with no education to 21.7 years among those who completed secondary school.
