Nigeria, Oct. 17 -- Four vigilantes have been killed during an attack on Shurum, a village in the Dorowa Babuje District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The vigilantes were attacked by gunmen at about 11:56 p.m. on Friday, according to residents.

A community member, Bulus Bature, said the vigilantes were on duty when the attackers struck.

"They were watching over our community when the gunmen struck and killed them," Mr Bature said.

He described the killings as painful, noting that the victims had volunteered to protect their community from attacks.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the incident.
