FG, Niger plan to organise artisanal mining, Bago says
Nigeria, Oct. 8 -- Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago says the federal government is working with the Niger State Government to establish a responsible mining policy and organise artisanal miners in the state.
Mr Bago disclosed this when he received members of the Niger State Inter-Tribal Association, who visited him to condole with the government over the deaths of 37 artisanal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Bologi Ibrahim, the governor's Chief Press Secretary.
Mr Bago said the government would organise artisanal miners into cooperatives and ensure they have the necessary tools and safety measures to operate.
