India, Oct. 9 -- Concrete offers an unfashionable lesson to a civilisation addicted to speed: strength takes time. A freshly poured slab may look complete, but its real transformation has only begun. Cement reacts with water, particles bind, moisture is retained, and strength develops gradually. Engineers therefore do not simply pour concrete and walk away. They cure it, protect it and allow it to mature. What appears to be waiting is, in fact, part of construction.
