India, June 4 -- Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal met West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in Kolkata to discuss plans for transforming the state into Eastern India's leading maritime hub. The discussions focused on boosting port-led development, logistics infrastructure and maritime connectivity across the region.

Under the proposed roadmap, maritime projects worth Rs.19,209 crore are expected to be implemented by 2031. The investment is projected to create over 62,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities while strengthening West Bengal's position as a key gateway for trade, shipping and logistics in eastern India.
