India, June 26 -- Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh stepped up their attack on the BJP Government on Thursday after an FIR was lodged in connection with the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, with Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai questioning the timing and scope of the police action.

Police in Ayodhya registered the FIR on Thursday following a complaint from a member of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, hours after the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) also backed demands for a criminal case in the matter.
