India, June 14 -- British armed forces have intercepted and detained a Russian-linked oil tanker in the English Channel in what officials described as the first UK-led operation against Moscow's so-called "shadow fleet." The vessel, identified as Smyrtos, is suspected of helping Russia transport oil while bypassing Western sanctions imposed over the war in Ukraine.

The operation involved Royal Marine Commandos, officers from the National Crime Agency, helicopters, aircraft, and Royal Navy vessels. The tanker was boarded during a six-hour mission conducted in coordination with French authorities. Following the interception, the ship was ordered to remain off the southern coast of England while investigations continue.
