India, Sept. 2 -- A search and rescue operation was underway on Wednesday to trace two Army soldiers who went missing after a boat capsized in the Yamuna River at Hathnikund Barrage, officials said.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening during a joint watermanship training exercise at the barrage.

According to an official statement, the boat was caught in strong currents towards the downstream side of the barrage while the soldiers were undergoing training.

Teams attempted to retrieve the boat, but it became trapped in strong eddies around the sluice gates and subsequently capsized, sweeping the crew away in the fast-moving water.

"Two members of the crew are presently missing," the statement said.
