India, July 13 -- US President Donald Trump has said that Washington could take control of the Strait of Hormuz and serve as its guardian amid rising tensions with Iran, adding that the US would be compensated for securing the strategic waterway.

In an interview, Trump said the United States would "take over" the Strait of Hormuz and could potentially manage operations in the region. He claimed that if the US assumes responsibility for protecting the key shipping route, it would receive financial reimbursement.
