India, July 5 -- Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) ushered in a new era of passenger rail transportation in Tripura and the Northeast with the inauguration of the region's first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train service.

Chief Minister of Tripura, Professor (Dr) Manik Saha, flagged off the inaugural run of Train No 75679/75680 (Agartala-Karimganj-Agartala) MEMU at Agartala Railway Station on 4th July, 2026.

The train, which had been operating earlier as a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) service, has now been successfully replaced and upgraded by a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU), marking a major technological advancement following the electrification of the route.
