The Dog Who Was Never Left Behind
India, Sept. 17 -- At the end of their lives, the five Pandava brothers and Draupadi began their final journey toward the Himalayas, renouncing their kingdom to walk toward heaven on foot. Along the way, a stray dog joined them, walking faithfully beside Yudhishthira through cold, hunger, and exhaustion, as one by one, his brothers and wife fell and passed away.
When Yudhishthira alone reached the gates of heaven, Indra invited him in, but told him the dog could not enter. Yudhishthira refused outright, saying he would rather forsake heaven itself than abandon a creature that had remained loyal to him through the entire journey.
