Markandeya, destined from birth to die at the young age of sixteen, spent his final hours in unwavering, unbroken worship of Shiva, refusing outright to leave the sacred Shivaling even as Yama, the god of death himself, arrived personally to claim him as fate had decided.

When Yama's noose reached toward the boy to take his life, it encircled the Shivaling itself instead, provoking Shiva to emerge in tremendous fury and strike down death on the spot, granting Markandeya eternal life in recognition of his unshaken, uninterrupted devotion.
