India, Aug. 14 -- According to the first DNA-based census released by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, India has 22,446 wild elephants. There are fewer than 500,000 elephants in total worldwide (approximately 415,000 African elephants and 40,000 to 50,000 Asian elephants), and India is home to more than 60 per cent of the world's wild Asian elephant population.
