India, Oct. 6 -- Vivekananda, before becoming a monk, was known simply as Narendra, a sharp, restlessly questioning young man thoroughly unwilling to accept matters of faith purely on authority alone. He visited several respected and well-known religious leaders of his time, asking each one directly and without hesitation whether they had personally, actually seen God, only to receive vague, evasive, or unconvincing answers in return each time.
