India, May 14 -- A major accident was averted in Mumbai's Grant Road area on Thursday after a staircase in a four-storey residential-cum-commercial building collapsed, leaving 63 people stranded before being safely rescued by emergency teams.

According to officials from the fire department, the incident occurred at Yusuf Building located in Kharjeetji Rana Lane in Grant Road (East). The staircase between the ground and first floors suddenly gave way, with a portion of the structure left hanging dangerously.

The ground floor of the building houses commercial shops and offices, while the upper floors are used for residential purposes. Residents on the second floor were initially trapped following the collapse.
