India, July 1 -- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few hours. The weather department's nowcast predicts intense rain spells accompanied by lightning, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.

Heavy overnight rainfall has already led to waterlogging in several parts of Mumbai, affecting traffic movement and disrupting normal life. Civic authorities are closely monitoring low-lying areas, while emergency teams have been deployed to respond to flooding, fallen trees and other rain-related incidents.
