India, Nov. 1 -- Bengal would have become part of a "greater Bangladesh" had the BJP not come to power, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday said, assuring applicants for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act that they would receive their citizenship by December 31 this year.

Addressing a large gathering of the Matua community at Thakurnagar in North 24 Parganas, Adhikari reminded how the previous Government led by the then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had consistently slowed the implementation of CAA and impeded a large number of SC Matua communities who had migrated to India fleeing religious persecution in Bangladesh from acquiring Indian citizenship.
