India, May 3 -- Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said the state government will seek the death penalty for the accused in the Pune child rape-murder case and ensure that the trial is completed on a fast-track basis.

The statement came after the brutal killing of a four-year-old child in Bhor tehsil of Pune district triggered widespread anger and protests. A 65-year-old man with a criminal background has been arrested in connection with the case.

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he had spoken twice with the victim's father and assured the family of full support from the government. He said all efforts would be made to secure capital punishment for the accused.
