India, Sept. 2 -- A jail guard was seriously injured after an inmate allegedly fired at him with a country-made pistol in an attempt to escape from the district jail in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen on Wednesday morning, police said.

The incident took place during Raksha Bandhan celebrations inside the jail.

According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pratibha Sharma, the inmate, identified as Nilesh Thakur, was lodged in the jail in an attempted murder case.

During the celebrations, Thakur approached the main gate carrying a basket of fruits and pressured jail guard Digvijay Singh Tomar to open it, Sharma said.

When Tomar refused, Thakur allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol concealed inside the fruit basket and fired at him.
