India, Aug. 3 -- Indonesian rescuers searched for possible missing passengers on Monday after a ferry caught fire off the main island of Java, killing at least five people and leaving authorities uncertain about how many were still unaccounted for.

The Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry was carrying more people than listed on its manifest when the fire broke out on Sunday, officials said. A total of 229 people had been rescued and five bodies recovered by Monday morning.

Initial reports based on the ship's manifest said the ferry was carrying 232 passengers and 39 crew members when it caught fire between 6 am and 7 am in waters off Sumenep regency.
