India, Sept. 8 -- The Delhi Government's plan to bring in a new safety policy for paying-guest accommodation may have been prompted by the Satya Niketan building collapse, but attempts to regulate PGs in the city go back more than three decades.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday said the Delhi government, in coordination with the MCD, was working towards introducing a policy under which every building used for public activities, whether a PG, nursing home, school or any other institution, would be required to undergo periodic structural audits and obtain building safety certification. No building would be allowed to conduct public activities without ensuring its safety.
