India, Aug. 31 -- The Union government on Monday deferred the census operations in Manipur, a statement from the Chief Minister's Secretariat said.

The decision came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level review meeting in New Delhi to assess the current situation in Manipur, it said.

The development came a day before house listing of the census exercise is scheduled to begin in the state from September 1.
