India, May 12 -- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the murder of Suvendu Adhikari's aide Chandranath Rath and registered an FIR in the case, officials said.

The agency stepped in following a request from the West Bengal government and has formed a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) from its Special Crime division in Delhi.

Officials said the team includes experienced investigators drawn from multiple units of the agency and will report to the Joint Director of the CBI's Kolkata zone. Officers from the Kolkata branch are also assisting in the probe.
