India, May 27 -- Acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta died today after allegedly falling from the terrace of his multi-storey residence in south Kolkata, police said.

According to officials, Dutta was rushed to a private hospital near Dhakuria following the incident, where doctors declared him dead.

Police teams reached the residence soon after the incident and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall. Authorities said the filmmaker's family has not yet issued any official statement.

Several members of the Bengali film industry, including actors and directors, gathered at the hospital after news of his death emerged.
