India, Sept. 5 -- Around 330 people accused of involvement in various fraudulent activities, including impersonating police personnel and extorting money from people, have been arrested in a special crackdown in Assam, Director General of Police Harmeet Singh said.

The operation began early Saturday and was still underway, with the number of arrests expected to increase, the DGP said.

Some of the suspects have been traced outside Assam, including in cities such as Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and police teams are working to bring them under the net, Singh said.

"Around 330 people, accused of being involved in various fraudulent activities, have been arrested in a crackdown since early Saturday," he said.
