Senators push prevention beyond school gates after Zamboanga shooting
Manila, Aug. 19 -- Senators on Wednesday said preventing another school tragedy would require action well beyond campus gates, putting greater emphasis on how children are guided at home, what they encounter online, their access to firearms, mental health support, and the laws meant to protect young people.
Their calls followed the tragic shooting at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School campus, which prompted separate proposals aimed at addressing factors that could expose children to violence or allow warning signs to go unchecked.
Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian focused on minors' exposure to social media after footage of the attack was reportedly livestreamed and subsequently circulated online.
