Manila, May 26 -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) has extended assistance, including securing evacuation sites, following the massive fire in Parola Compound in Manila that displaced more than 2,000 families over the weekend.

Various police units were mobilized to support evacuation centers and maintain peace and order in the area, the PNP said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Our mandate is not only to maintain peace and order, but to make the people feel the presence of their PNP at a time when they need it most, including this kind of unfortunate incident," PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said.
