Manila, July 13 -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday advised communities near Mayon and Kanlaon volcanoes to remain vigilant and follow official safety advisories as both volcanoes continue to show signs of activity, despite unchanged alert levels.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol, in a Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon interview, said Mayon and Kanlaon remain under Alert Levels 3 and 2, respectively, based on their latest monitoring.

The update came after Mayon recorded its highest sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission in 26 years, with 13,928 tons per day recorded on July 11.
