Manila, Sept. 24 -- The Department of Health-Davao (DOH) on Thursday urged the public to take precautions against leptospirosis, a bacterial disease transmitted through floodwaters contaminated with animal urine, especially from rats.

The advisory was issued as heavy rains and flooding continue to affect parts of the region, increasing the risk of water-borne diseases.

The agency explained that leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira bacteria, which enter the body through cuts or abrasions in the skin or through the eyes, nose, and mouth when exposed to contaminated water.
