Manila, April 12 -- A town and a barangay (village) in Davao del Norte have been renamed through a plebiscite on Saturday.
In a social media post, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said 7,555 voters checked "yes" to rename the municipality of San Isidro to Sawata, and Barangay Sawata to Barangay Poblacion.
Only 81 disagreed, prompting the Municipal Plebiscite Board of Canvassers to officially declare "the results of the plebiscite renaming the municipality of San Isidro to the municipality of Sawata."
It recorded a 36 percent voter turnout out of the town's 20,990 registered voters.
The plebiscite was held after Republic Act 11814, renaming the municipality of San Isidro and Barangay Sawata, lapsed into law on June 2, 2022.
