Manila, June 22 -- The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) transferred another batch of 200 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City to the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm located in Occidental Mindoro on Sunday.

BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. said the transfer was part of the Bureau's preparation for the eventual closure of the NBP by 2028.

The BuCor earlier said 15,730 PDLs have been transferred since 2022 to various prison and penal farms nationwide across the country.

The move, Catapang said, also aims to address overcrowding and to modernize and decentralize the correctional system.
