BOC warns public vs Customs-held parcel scams
Manila, July 18 -- The Bureau of Customs (BOC) warned the public against "love scams" that trick victims into paying money to release a supposed parcel or gift.
In a news release Saturday, the BOC said scammers use the agency's name to lend legitimacy to their fraud and convince victims that fees must be paid before a package can be released.
The modus usually begins with an introduction made via social media, messaging applications or online dating platforms. After gaining the victim's trust, the scammer claims to have sent a gift from abroad, such as jewelry, gadgets, money or other high-value items. In some instances, they initially send a small, legitimate parcel to secure the victim's trust.
