Manila, April 7 -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Western Visayas (BFAR-6) is working on revitalizing the salt industry in the region through its Salt Industry Project (SIP).
The SIP has a budget of PHP7.33 million, consisting of livelihood interventions for nine fisherfolk beneficiaries in the region.
BFAR-6 Regional Director Remia Aparri, in a media forum on Monday, emphasized the need to support the local salt industry as 99 percent of the country's supply is imported.
"We want to have our locally produced salt. This will also provide additional livelihood for our fisherfolk and improve product quality. Our intervention is providing materials as well as other equipment for them to produce salt," he said.
