India, July 7 -- Android backups are easy to ignore. They run quietly in the background, doing their job without asking for attention. Most people only remember they exist when something goes wrong, like a lost phone, a factory reset, or a switch to a new device. That is when backups suddenly become essential.

Now, they also come with a clearer cost. Starting July 7, 2026, Google will begin counting Android backups toward the same storage pool used by Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos for new users. Existing users will see the change later. In simple terms, your phone's backup data will no longer sit outside your storage limit.
