Punjab, Sept. 9 -- Long-distance relationships are common in India for entirely practical reasons: work postings, higher study, and families in different cities. The advice around them tends to be about frequency of contact, which is the wrong variable.

Constant contact is not the answer

Couples who attempt to be permanently available to each other tend to experience the distance as a continuous low-grade obligation. Being on a call while doing something else is not connection; it is proximity theatre.

What tends to work better is protected time - fewer, longer, undistracted conversations that both people plan around, rather than constant partial attention.
