Punjab, Sept. 10 -- The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea by Abu Salem seeking premature release from his life sentence in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. The bench found no reason to interfere with the Bombay High Court's April 2026 order rejecting the same request.
What was being argued
Premature release is a remission question: whether a convict serving a life term has served enough of it, under the applicable policy, to be considered for release before death. It is decided against the seriousness of the offence, conduct in custody and the terms attached to the sentence.
