Fiji, Sept. 30 -- Tuvalu has inaugurated its first woman Governor-General, Temukisa Auina Penehuro Hauma, in a historic change of leadership on the eve of the country's 48th Independence anniversary.
Hauma, 71, was sworn into office at Niutao Hall today, formally beginning her four-year term as Tuvalu's Governor-General.
The Acting Chief Justice of Tuvalu, Sir John Muria, administered the Oath of Office and Oath of Allegiance, as required under the Constitution.
Prime Minister Feleti Teo congratulated Hauma and said her appointment marked a significant moment for the country.
"It is a historic moment for Tuvalu, as she becomes the first woman to hold this position," Teo said.
