Fiji, April 9 -- The Cook Islands has taken an important step on the world stage, with Prime Minister Mark Brown framing a new defence agreement as both a continuation of history and a clear signal of independence.

In a statement, Brown highlighted the significance of a newly signed Declaration on Defence and Security with New Zealand, calling it "a key moment in the journey of our nation."
