Supreme Court puts pedestrians first, declares right to walk on footpaths a fundamental right
Bhubaneswar, June 20 -- The Supreme Court on Friday declared that the right to walk on safe and demarcated footpaths is a fundamental right under the Constitution and urged the government to enact a law recognising this right and the responsibility of authorities to create and maintain pedestrian infrastructure.
A bench comprising Justices P S Narasimha and Atul S Chandurkar said that pedestrians' rights must take precedence over motorised traffic and stressed the need for clearly marked and well-maintained footpaths, as reported by The Indian Express.
The court also urged the government to enact a dedicated law recognising both the right to walk and the responsibilities of authorities tasked with providing pedestrian infrastructure.
