Bhubaneswar, June 26 -- A branch postmaster in Odisha's Kandhamal district has been arrested for allegedly misusing over Rs 17.22 lakh collected from depositors.

Police said the accused was taken into custody from R Udayagiri area on Wednesday. The case was registered after a complaint from the Inspector of Posts of G Udayagiri postal sub division. The accused worked at the Gardingia branch post office under Paburia sub post office.

Girish Chandra Digal (39), the branch postmaster, is accused of not depositing money collected from customers into official accounts for nearly two years. Officials said over 100 depositors may have been affected.
