Bhubaneswar, March 20 -- Security forces have intensified a major anti-Maoist operation to apprehend top Maoist leader Shukru, who is believed to be surrounded in the forested tri-junction of Rayagada, Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts.

The operation is part of a broader push to meet the Centre's target of a Maoist-free India by March 31.

According to sources, combing operations have been significantly stepped up in the region, with security personnel strategically deployed to block all possible escape routes. Indications suggest that the operation may reach a decisive stage soon.

Security forces have reportedly encircled vast forest areas along the Rayagada-Kandhamal-Kalahandi border to restrict the movement of Maoist cadres.
