Odisha farmer 'ends life' by consuming pesticide, family links death to paddy procurement delay
Bhubaneswar, June 24 -- A farmer from Odisha'sNuapada district has allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday after consuming pesticide, where family members are claiming he was distressed over paddy lying unsold at the mandi and getting damaged in rain. The incident has sparked protests in the area, with villagers demanding compensation and government support for the grieving family.
The deceased has been identified as Nepal Majhi of Jadamunda village under Komna block. According to official records, he had received a token to sell 36 quintals and 96 kilograms of paddy at the Jadamunda rabi paddy mandi between May 30 and June 28. However, the paddy was allegedly not lifted, and continuous rainfall damaged the stock.
