Odisha doctors perform first successful intrauterine blood transfusion, save unborn baby in woman's womb
India, Oct. 9 -- A private hospital in Rourkela has successfully performed an intrauterine blood transfusion (IUT) on an unborn baby suffering from severe anaemia caused by Rh isoimmunisation. The procedure was carried out under ultrasound guidance, with doctors transfusing blood directly to the baby inside the mother's womb.
The condition had put the unborn baby's life at risk. Following the procedure, both the mother and the baby are doing well, according to the hospital.
Treating Anaemia Before Birth
Rh isoimmunisation can occur when a mother with Rh-negative blood carries a baby with Rh-positive blood. In some cases, the mother's immune system produces antibodies that attack the baby's red blood cells, causing anaemia.
